I think that it's extraordinarily important that we maintain fun in what we do. When we started out, it was an awful lot of fun. Of course, the public got shafted every now and then, and after a while we began to take their presence seriously. We began to feel as if we really were responsible for successful, clear communication. I don't think we are. I think we're responsible for stretching the work, setting it off in new directions, and keeping fun in the house. I hope this field never loses its sense of fun. Above all, I hope we don't become missionaries. Don't feel as if you're Bible salesmen. The world has too many of those already. What you know other people will learn. Don't feel as if the key to successful interpretation is only in your hands. What's in your hands, I think and hope, is intelligence: the ability to see more than when you were first led up to it, that you can make it more.

In order for something to be designed it must be the result of an evolutionary process: One that results from aberration, mutation and adaptability. In this sense, a work is not designed if it is necessarily free of all aberration and potential mutation. In order to provide the opportunity of mutation, one must not only adapt to risk, but even encourage it.

When we consider the evolution of an artifact however, the workmanship of certainty is static, whereas the workmanship of uncertainty is most likely to generate innovation. Like any form of evolution, craft can only advance through mutation. Risk provokes an evolutionary mutation through the necessitated gesture of reconciliation of accident.
